Interests and hobbies are a key part of a youth’s development and overall health. Whether it is music, reading, sports, colouring, or whatever it may be, finding an activity that brings out positivity and passion is very important for youth. A hobby that is continuously fulfilled or the frequent practice of trying new things is one of the most beneficial ways to alleviate stress, feelings of isolation and loneliness as well as a solution to overcoming daily struggles.

For youth, discovering and practicing particular hobbies provides them with opportunities to display their unique talents and abilities that make them who they are. Not only do hobbies promote feelings of happiness and success, they allow youth to develop new friendships or enhance pre-established relationships. Hobbies are a great way for youth to learn more about themselves and their surroundings while empowering them to step out of their comfort zones in order to grow as an individual and build self-esteem. Being able to identify your strengths and weaknesses is a key depiction that youth need to be able to make to better develop themselves. Sometimes these early discovered talents and hobbies can create a pathway for future career endeavours and long-term passions.

Discovering new talents and hobbies can happen at any age or any part of life. Sometimes hobbies can be forgotten and disregarded due to a lack of interest towards a particular pastime. However, these hobbies can also be rekindled, or the possibility of new interests can be uncovered. Local communities do an outstanding job at offering a variety of activities and clubs that youth can participate in. Right here in Brantford, the YMCA presents youth with multiple clubs, teams, activities, camps and day-to-day leisure time for individuals to try new things and build on pre-discovered hobbies and talents. Being able to take time for yourself in a manner that is self-rewarding and uplifting is crucial to becoming and remaining as healthy and happy as can be.
