The Importance of Hobbies in Ageing

What are some things you like to do in your spare time? 

Hobbies are activities enjoyed by an individual, typically during one’s down time, that support creativity, growth, relaxation and feelings of happiness. As a senior who may experience increased rates of social isolation and feelings of loneliness, it is critical to engage in activities that increase socialization, health, satisfaction and relaxation. Hobbies can range from activities like singing, reading, painting, and dancing to playing cards, hiking, playing with your pets, playing board games and cooking. Any interest that you have or activity that you engage in can be a hobby. Participation in any activity that provides an individual with happiness is of paramount importance to their emotional wellbeing and overall health. 

In specific for seniors, hobbies provide a foundation of socialization, physical activity and meaningful enrichment during leisure time. Engaging in a hobby a few times a week may improve cardiovascular health, emotional health, mental health and overall health outcomes (Chang, Wray & Lin, 2014). With consistent engagement in hobbies, seniors are simultaneously combating feelings of loneliness, boredom and social isolation. Hobbies provide seniors with an opportunity to socialize, a new experience, methods to improve physical health and relieve stress, a better sense of community and strong sense purpose. It is important for seniors to engage in rewarding activities that enhance wellbeing, self-esteem and individual satisfaction. 

For our seniors in Brantford, there are many opportunities to engage in programming within the City of Brantford that will provide meaningful connections and enhance quality of living. There are many programs available such as SKIP’s program: Buzz Me which connects seniors with a trained volunteer who engages in warm and meaningful conversation in hopes of tackling and reducing social isolation (City of Brantford, 2020). Furthermore, the Grand River Council on Aging provides seniors with virtual programs to enjoy at home, during the pandemic. These programs offer seniors a way to meet new people, engage in meaningful activities and become engaged members of the community while simultaneously combating boredom and feelings of loneliness (City of Brantford, 2020). While these are just a few, there are many more relevant and purposeful programs in Brantford that strive to enhance the lives of seniors within the community.
